One Acre Fields
Journal · method · entry 06

Know your why. Then the plan. Then the numbers.

The order I learned on the acre, and why founders get it backwards.

Placeholder opening paragraph in your voice. The drop cap is the only flourish; the rest is plain, well-set text at sixty-two characters a line. This is where you tell the story of the week, or the founder, or the thing the land did.

Second paragraph. Short sentences. One idea each. Concrete where it counts: the beans, the stream, the number that mattered, the decision that got written down.

Why first

Placeholder. The section where the point is made. Most roadmaps are written for a company three times the size. The land taught me to want less and finish more.

Know your why. Then the plan. Then the numbers. Time slows down.

Then the plan

Placeholder. Lists are allowed when they are real lists:

  • Read everything. Roadmap, tickets, support inbox, the numbers.
  • Talk to everyone separately.
  • One page back: what to stop, what to keep, what to ship next.

Then the numbers

Placeholder closing paragraph. End on the thing you’d say to a founder across the table, not on a summary.

Written at the tent, before the mist came in. — Janaka
